 | 09:03 pm - New Years at the Castle? Also shopping question So The Castle was recommended to me earlier as a good gothy place to chill for New Years. Great frustration on trying to get information on the event off their website. There is none! Like where to get tickets? Do they sell tickets? Is there going to be a theme? When do the doors open, will it be the same as normal or earlier or???? Is there a dress code as my friend isn't the uber goth I'd email them but they only have a link for their email which doesn't work on my computer. So I ask here since you have all been so helpful to me previously!
A secondary question is, I plan to do my boxing day shopping in Florida! Yay! Where are good places to go clothing shopping for the tall and curvy girls? Sizes here tend to be on the petite size or business casual for 40 year olds for everything else. I need me some casual summer clothing that isn't teensy weensy. If it helps, I dress like I live in San Francisco. Hippie chick meets goth girl.
Thank you for the help and I can't wait to see your city! :D

 | 12:55 pm - Found dog My boyfriend and I live off of MacDill Ave between MLK Drive and Hillsborough Ave, and a Yorkie followed him up to our apartment last night. He has a tag with a Miami-area phone number and a name. We tried calling the number, but the voice mail box is full. This morning, we took him over to the Animal Coalition of Tampa, who checked him for a microchip. However, the microchip is not registered. So, we're at a dead-end. Being that the tag would indicate the dog is from the Miami area, we think that the owners are up in this area on a trip. Below the cut are a couple of photos. The hair on his back is grey, so we were told that the breed is commonly referred to as Silkie.
Edited to add: We found his home.

 | 02:24 am So I've really gotten into the BBC series Top Gear, and in this clip from 2005, they pit a small car against a DH race bike through a small coastal town in Portugal.
I'm gonna have to be honest here, this is some of the best bicycle cinematography I've seen. This also the second time a bicycle has won one of their many silly challenges, out of the two times they've pitted a car against a bike.

I was driving around tonight and saw the insane light show going on at my local Chick-fil-a (Waters Ave) and was wondering what other crazy holiday displays were out there. So here is my challenge to you all- find and take a picture of the craziest holiday displays you can find and post them here.

 | 02:49 pm - Alarm Systems? Hey Tampa, what type of alarm systems do you guys use if you live in a house? How much do you pay and for what? Do you like it? Are there any companies you would run like hell from?
Two of our close friends got robbed within a month so we are thinking of activating one. We already have a pre-installed ADT system that we never used in our house.
Somebody recommended savemyalarm.com but I read horrible reviews about it, even though it looks cheap. Anyone have good/bad experiences with this one?
On the (jokingly) other hand, anyone have experience rigging a guillotine on top of your TV? That may be an alternative too....but then my laptop would still be out in the open. And I don't want broken windows.

 | 09:24 am - memo So what's with the crappy poasts, tampa? You people are so boaring.
Anyway, I'm in the market for a new beverage coaster for my desk. The one I currently have is a cheap bamboo and cork jobby from wally world and I hate it. I'm thinking these babies from crate&barrel, but I'm iffy. Anyway, what do you use, tampa? And does anyone want to date me?
Spoiler alert!
( I went with the cb... )
It's super awesome. Note the non-alcoholic beer, because I'm not a fucking alcoholic, like you are.* *or actually I am, which is why I'm drinking non-alcoholic. But I digest...

psychology [dooptheory]
 | 07:01 pm I've been "working" on this research topic for over a year and only recently was able to conduct the research with permission from my university. However now that I've completed all the necessary steps, I'm trying to analyze the results a bit further now that I'm not under a deadline (completing the research was part of a course). But I'm having A LOT of trouble finding previous research that could help emphasize my results and give justification to my conclusions.
I was looking to find a relationship between major stress events (death of family member, end of a serious relationship, beginning school, etc.) and changing outward appearance (cutting hair, getting a tattoo, growing a beard, tanning, changing the way make-up is worn etc.). Through survey research I did find a rather strong relationship between the two but regression analysis shows that age also strongly influenced the amount of changes made to appearance. I was expecting this because through passive observation and personal experience, younger individuals (18-25) are likely to 'experiment' with how they look, for whatever reason, but I attribute it to identity formation and the like.
BUT I can't find any research that looks specifically at changes to outward appearance and age. I tried to make a few connections with identity and age and identity and physical appearance, but it's just not panning out in the way that I expected. I found some research on personality formation and major stress events but nothing that involves outward appearance.
I've been searching extensively and passively for months and this is my last resort. Do you know of ANY research that touches on the topic of identity formation and outward/physical appearance? Help!

economics [ikilled007]
 | 11:59 pm - Unemployment funds going 'absolutely broke' Looks like taxes will be going up and benefits going down. That should help the alleged "recovery":
40 state programs to be emptied by the jobless tsunami within two years
The recession's jobless toll is draining unemployment-compensation funds so fast that according to federal projections, 40 state programs will go broke within two years and need $90 billion in loans to keep issuing the benefit checks. The shortfalls are putting pressure on governments to either raise taxes or shrink the aid payments.
Debates over the state benefit programs have erupted in South Carolina, Nevada, Kansas, Vermont and Indiana. And the budget gaps are expected to spread and become more acute in the coming year, compelling legislators in many states to reconsider their operations. Currently, 25 states have run out of unemployment money and have borrowed $24 billion from the federal government to cover the gaps. By 2011, according to Department of Labor estimates, 40 state funds will have been emptied by the jobless tsunami.
"There's immense pressure, and it's got to be faced," said Indiana state Rep. David Niezgodski (D), a sponsor of a bill that addressed the gaps in Indiana's unemployment program. "Our system was absolutely broke." This economic collapse is going to be biblical when all is said and done, and the talking heads and political hacks are talking about a recovery!

 | 01:54 pm - winter tires all of a sudden i have a really nice road bike...which is awesome except i need to put some snow friendly tires on it, suggestions? im a city commuter, and i don't have alot of money so super fancy tires (read above 30-40$ a tire) is out of my price range. thanks in advance. also now that i have this bike thats stupid nice for commuting im debating ways of wrapping the frame to one: make it less desirable to thieves and two: not let it get all scratched to shit. the two ideas im tossing around are gaffers tape, which i hear doesn't mess up the frame if/when you decide to take it off and/or old tubes sewed on, which will take more time than i have but i think it might look ok. anyway, other suggestions?

physics [fabulousme]
 | 10:45 am - Energy question... So I'm finishing up a course on Physics, Energy & the Environment, and I have a few problems giving me a really hard time. I've approached the one that follows in several ways and am not coming up with anything near the answer I am supposed to get.
"The oceans contain about 1.3x10^24cm^3 of water. Deuterium constitutes .028% (.00028) by MASS of natural Hydrogen. What is the total energy (in Joules) available from this deuterium via D-D fusion? Assume 4.0 MeV per fusion event. (ans 3.9x10^30J) For how many years could fusion reactors of 50% efficiency supply a power requirement of 2.0 million MW?" (ans. 3x10610 years)
Ok, so I know I have to figure out how much H is in the water to figure out how much D is in the water, so I can't just multiply 1.3x10^24 by .00028, but using 11.11% (2 H to 16 O in H2O by mass) got me an end result way too small. I also know to convert MeV to J (1.062x10^-13), and I guess we're assuming all of the D will be fused. None of my answers come close, and the book doesn't have a similar example. I can't ask my prof about this because he's just not helpful and I'm p.o.'d at him and that's another story. Anyone have thoughts on setting this up? Seems it should be as easy as getting the amount of H from the water, multiplying that by .00028, multiplying that by 4MeV and tada! but if I don't get the first steps right, we all know what happens after that. I don't think I need Avogadro's number as I don't have moles (and this book hasn't used it really). The book also mentions earlier that D constitutes one in 7000 H, so @3500 water molecules are HDO but I don't think this is useful. I'd like to believe I'm missing something obvious here. Ideas?
Thanks!

 | 05:21 pm - Anyone else here on Facebook? There's a cool application for Philosophy. Probably one of the few worthwhile apps on the site.

 | 12:55 pm - Looking for a philosophical definition of "government" I'm a high school debate coach and our new resolution* has me searching for definitions of "government." I'm looking for one that defines the limits of government, some of students are looking for definitions that justify expansion of government.
Beyond Locke, Rousseau, and Hobbes, is there a philosophy that we should explore? A philosopher or work we should read?
Thank you for your help.
*Resolved: Economic sanctions ought not to be used to achieve foreign policy objectives. Yes, the affirmative is arguing a negative. Someone out there hates me. XD

If you look closely you can see my homemade studded tyre. It takes a long time to put in 250-odd rivets. There's the tread of a second tyre underneath it to protect the inner tube.

 | 07:10 am - So apparently the cyclists are the bigots... Or, WTF?
Religious bigotry of the day
A bunch of spoiled brats who want a bicycle path through an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn had a comeuppance from the weather.
The Hasidic Jews in the area wear clothing that covers them up. Bicyclists dress in scanty attire. Mayor Mike Bloomberg acquiesced to the request to end the bike path. Well, this did not go over well with certain people who got all huffy about it. The Associated Press reported on Friday:
NEW YORK — Bicyclists planning a protest ride through Brooklyn are calling it their “Freedom Ride” — free of clothing, that is. The activists want to go topless during Saturday’s ride. They said Mayor Michael Bloomberg has erased a bike lane from an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood because some residents don’t want to see scantily clad women.
But in Williamsburg, the well-covered Jewish faithful said skimpy clothing is not the issue.
Leo Moskowitz said the bike path keeps school buses from stopping near the curb, and his five kids can get knocked down by bikes.
A Bloomberg spokesman points out that the city is keeping another bike lane on another block in Williamsburg that’s safer — a two-way path protected by a row of parked vehicles.
So it is not about bicycling. If it were, they would ride the path. It is about how the people in the area choose to dress. This does not meet the standards of others who feel they have to mock the Jews.
...snip...
Yeah, whatever there, guy. There's more where he seems to think it's totally OK for people to force their religious crap on people passing through, but apparently calling bullshit on that is some kind of bigotry.
So glad I'm an atheist. Current Mood: cynical

We found a house in Riverview and will find out when we close next week. It's a new house so the walls are all beige. Neither of us want to paint ourselves, so I'm planning on hiring painters. Any recommendations?

 | 12:25 am - school counseling vs. school psychology hi all,
i'm looking to do my master's or certificate in school counseling of some sorts. could anyone try and explain a little, what are the main differences between a school counselor, for example one that works with students at an elementary or high school, and one that works as a school psychologist? pros/cons with both sub-specialties? i already have my master's degree in rehab counseling, but i'd like to do something that entails work in the school environment, and i'm pretty sure i have to go back to school to get 'specially' certified in order to do school counseling.
i'm interested in really working with kids one-on-one, tackling mental health issues, learning/cognition development, any barriers to academic performance. i know for sure i DON'T want to do guidance counseling.
Thanks so much everyone =)

 | 02:10 am - graduates? Hi there. i was wondering if anyone else graduated this semester?
if so congratulations!
i was wondering if we could get a post saying what you got it in(ba/bs, ma, phd) and what your planning to do after you got your degree.
also i think it'd be cool to write one thing you'd suggest all those members who are still in school or just starting out to do that you wished you have done.
here's mine: 1.i graduated with a ba in psych. i've been applying to entry level counseling positions for the past 2 weeks. still looking for an opening, i think it's harder because i'm moving out of state so that kinda presents a problem with interviewing. so i am planning on taking a year off working to get residency and study for the gre and then apply to grad school. i want to get an ma in rehab therapy.
2.internships/independent study!!! do one as soon as you can! the more or the longer you've done it the better.
i was thinking of making this a meme and asking this the end of each semester(also each fall semester for beginning members with different basics)..would anyone be interested or not? Current Music: DJ Surge-N - Britney Spears - Danja 'Blackout' Medley (Final Mix) | Powered by Last.fm
